'Insulted' Andean farmers pick GM potato fight with multinational Syngenta
A coalition of indigenous farmers in South America will today (12 January) launch an international protest against the multinational corporation Syngenta, claiming that its plans threaten their region's biodiversity, culture and food sovereignty.

Monday December 4, 2006 Ottawa - On Friday December 1st in Winnipeg, a representative from Agriculture and Agri-food Canada admitted that the department has no capacity to assess the social and economic impacts of Terminator seeds – seeds genetically engineered to be sterile after first planting – before introducing them into Canada.

More than 10,000 people have signed a petition calling on the Australian Minister of Agriculture to ban research, development and use of Terminator seeds in the country.

Delta & Pine Land , the US-based transnational seed giant that vows to commercialize Terminator seed technology, is expanding its global reach with the recent acquisition of Syngenta's global cotton seed business. The new acquisition gives Delta & Pine Land's cotton seed business a bigger stake in India, Brazil and Europe. The company is the world's leading cotton seed company. In 2005, DPL had revenues of US$366 million.

The General Secretary of the World Council of Churches today issued a strong condemnation of Terminator seeds and called on churches and ecumenical partners to take action to stop the technology. Dr. Samuel Kobia warned that sterile seed technology would increase economic injustice all over the world.

Farmers in Pakistan have gathered togther in a Pakistan Dehqan (farmers) Assembly and rejected the idea of Terminator seeds. More than two hundred representaives of farmers from different regions represented thousands of farmers and categorically said that they will resist any move to introduce terminator seeds in the country. They demanded that Pakistan government take steps to ban Terminator seeds and any research towards development of Terminator seeds.

El presidente de Brasil, Inácio Lula Da Silva manifestó su decidico apoyo a una fuerte moratoria internacional sobre Terminator durante su discurso de apertura para el Segmento de Alto Nivel de la 8ava Conferencia de las Partes del CDB de la ONU en Brasil, donde ministros del ambiente de todo el mundo se reunen esta semana. El gobierno de Brasil prohíbe actualmente las semillas Terminator.

CURITIBA, BRASIL, 24 marzo - Una amplia coalición de agricultores, campesinos, pueblos indígenas y organizaciones de la sociedad civil celebran hoy que los esfuerzos para minar la moratoria global sobre las tecnologías Terminator –semillas diseñadas genéticamente para ser estériles- hayan sido firmemente rechazados en la reunión del Convenio sobre Diversidad Biológica de la ONU.
